We now return to study voice leading patterns.
What is a double cadence? We can define it roughly as the following:
Double Cadence = Simple Cadence + Compound Cadence
Let’s construct it from our basic building blocks, the clausulae.
We can combine the two by removing the ANT of the first clausula and placing the 7-8 on the first two quarters of the measure. This will cause the ULT to be on a weak beat – and it will become the ANT of the compound cadence.
In all variants of the double cadence one voice has this form of a discant clausula – both in major and in minor. This is a valuable memory aid for double cadences.
