Lament Bass and Voice Exchange

Voice exchange often occurs between the second harmony and the last harmony. In minor this voice exchange includes false relations.

If we write out the diatonic progression in major, we can easily see which chords are possible in between the two positions of the V chord.

The best voice leading occurs when we use a 6/4 figure on the third bass note. 

Chromatic Voice Exchange 

Considering the Beethoven example, having an augmented sixth chord present does not affect the voice exchange.
